, the mould size should be slightly larger than the product size. The variability of shrinkage means that product tolerances should be as generous as other requirements, otherwise the moulding process needs to be strictly controlled. Since amorphous materials shrink less than semi-crystalline materials, these materials are preferred where tight product tolerances are required.
The following is a brief list of other shrinkage factors that may need to be considered when determining the mould size of a household product.
(a) Household product moulds may not be at room temperature. The moulded article should be allowed to cool to room temperature. For amorphous plastics, this is only a matter of heat shrinkage, which can be estimated from the coefficient of thermal expansion. The semi-crystalline material may shrink more due to further crystallization upon cooling.
(b) Even when cooled to room temperature in a household product mould, the semi-crystalline material may shrink during a period of time after spraying due to further crystallization. This is referred to as shrinkage after moulding, although usually small (less than 0.01%), this shrinkage may have to be considered for high precision products. One remedy is to ensure that crystallization is completed during moulding by, for example, increasing the cooling time.
(c) If the size of the product is suitable for use at high temperatures, this may need to be considered when determining the size of the mould for the household product.
